The German Foreign Office has decided to fund assistance activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Somalia with 1 million Euro, as announced by Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle at the AU Summit in Kampala on 22 July 2010. Germany appreciates the important work the ICRC is doing in Somalia and trusts that this support will enable the ICRC to continue with this work.

The humanitarian situation in south and central Somalia, especially in and around the capital Mogadishu is constantly deteriorating. More than 200,000 people have been displaced since the beginning of this year. Germany's contribution will be used to provide food, drinking water, medicine and shelter for those persons most in need.

With this contribution, German support for humanitarian relief efforts in Somalia is at 2.7 million Euro for the year 2010; in the past three years the German Government has made available more than 30 million Euro for humanitarian assistance in Somalia.
