Tourist visas are intended for persons who want to visit Germany for leisure. Proof of financial means for the visit will be necessary (see below).
Tourist visas are category C Schengen-visas and can be valid up to 90 days. If Germany is not your main destination (in terms of duration of stay), you will have to apply at the Embassy of the country in which you intend to stay longest.

Who can apply at the German Embassy Nairobi?
Yes. The German Embassy Nairobi will issue category C Schengen visa (e.g. business, visitor, medical) to applicants residing in Kenya (Kenyans and other). Nationals other than Kenyans will have to show a valid resident-permit and re-entry pass.
Seychellois nationals: Seychelles national passport holders are exempted of the Schengen-space visa obligation for stays not exceeding 90 days (in any 6 month period).
Other nationals: third-country nationals residing in the Seychelles will have to apply in person at the German Embassy in Nairobi. Please note that applications can no longer be lodged at the French Embassy in Mahé.
Burundi nationals residing in Burundi: no. These applicants will have to apply at the Embassy of Belgium in Bujumbura.
Third-country nationals residing in Burundi: yes. These applicants will have to apply in person at the German Embassy in Nairobi. Please note that applications con no longer be lodged at the Embassy of Belgium in Bujumbura.
No. Applicants residing in Eritrea will have to apply at the Italian Embassy in Asmara.
No. Residents in South Sudan (South Sudanese nationals and other) will have to apply at the German Embassy Kampala, Uganda.
Documents required for tourist visa
The following documents are required for a tourist visa. Please note that only complete applications will be accepted. Incomplete applications, forged documents and false information will result in immediate rejection and might lead to prosecution.
Kenyan nationals: original passport of applicant and one copy of the same. The passport must be valid up to a minimum of 3 months after intended return journey. The passport must have at least two empty pages and cannot be older than 10 years.
Nationals other than Kenyans, residing in Kenya: like Kenyan nationals, but must have a valid residence permit and re-entry permit for Kenya in addition.
Applicants can fill in their visa application form online. This form - the VIDEX form - will also generate a personal barcode that can be scanned at the Embassy and will ease the application process. The form needs to be filled in online but needs to be printed out, signed by the applicant and presented alongside the other required documents.

Original and one copy of medical insurance for the duration of stay, with minimum cover of EUR 30,000 and valid for the whole Schengen area.
Please note: the following list of insurance companies only lists the Kenyan insurance companies which fulfill the Schengen requirements for medical insurance. The insurance can also be purchased from any other insurance company operating in any Schengen country if fulfilling these requirements.

If your are an employee, you will need to provide a letter from your employer authorising your leave and stating your position, monthly income and amount of annual leave days. You will also need to provide a postal address, telephone number and information on the activities of your company.
If you are self-employed or owner of your business, you will need to provide your business registration certificate as well as bank statements of the last three month of the company. You will also need to provide a postal address, telephone number and information on the activities of your company.
If you are a low income earner or not employed, you will need to provide a marriage certificate (for spouses) or birth certificate (for children), showing a link to an income earner. If travelling without an income earner, and if travel not being taken care of by a host in Germany, you will need to provide proof of sufficient funds for the trip (not less than EUR 150 per day).
You will need to provide proof of financial means for the whole trip: pay-slips of the last three month (if employed) as well as bank statements of personal account of the last three month.
Your student identification card and/or a letter from your university/college/school including postal address and telephone contacts, stating your registration details. If you are travelling outside school holidays, you will also need a letter from your university/college/school excusing you from attending classes.
- Birth certificate, and:
- Statement of consent (no older than 3 month, stating purpose and date of travel by the parent(s) not accompanying the minor with the signature certified by a notary public, or:
- Official court ruling regarding custody, which certifies the parent not accompanying the minor as sole custodian, and/or relevant affidavit made in the presence of a notary public, or:
- Death certificate of the deceased parent

The processing of a long term category D visa (e.g. marriage, family reunion) can take up to 9 weeks.
